League of Legends: Worlds 2020 Format & Qualified Teams

Despite a season turned upside down in all regions of the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the different leagues have managed to continue with their competitions.

With the League of Legends World Championship 2020 pencilled in for November in Shanghai, here are the teams who will be doing battle for the Summoner's Cup.

As a reminder, the LPL and the LEC have received four spots since they are the two regions with the best international results over the last two years.

UPDATE: 1 September

With the absence of the VCS teams confirmed due travel restrictions relating to the pandemic, Riot have amended the format for the Play-In Stage. As such, the LCK third seed now automatically qualifies for the Group Stage, and the Play-In Stage is reduced from 12 teams to 10.

In total, 22 teams will take part in Worlds:

  • LPL and LEC: four teams each
  • LCK and LCS: three teams each
  • PCS (Southeast Asia): two teams
  • CBLOL (Brazil), TCL (Turkey), LJL (Japan), LLA (Latin America), OPL (Oceania), LCL: one team each

Worlds 2020 Format

Play-In Stage

Worlds 2020 kicks off with the Play-In Stage on September 25.

The ten teams involved will be split into two groups, and will play out a single-match round robin format.

The top team in each group automatically moves on to the Main Event, while the bottom team in each group will be eliminated.

The second, third and fourth-place teams will advance to a knockout gauntlet stage with the following best-of-five format:

  • third place teams face fourth place teams from the same group;
  • the winner faces the second-place team from the opposite group;
  • the winner of these matches advance to the Main Event.

Main Event

Teams will be drawn into four groups of four, based on a seeding system. Matches will be single shootouts, with groups completing a double round robin.

The top two teams will advance to the Knockout Stage, where matches are single-elimination, best-of-five series. Win and you progress, lose and you go home.

NOTE: Worlds 2020 will be played on Patch 10.19, with Samira and Yone disabled.
